In Place: Literary Cartography is a quirky travelogue covering the UK and Ireland, published six times a year. Three places each issue, arranged alphabetically.
We open with Alresford, Bridekirk, Cambridge. The next issue in mid May 2026 brings stories from Dublin, Edinburgh and Fifehead Magdalen. By the time we reach Z, the seasons will have turned twice over. No place in the UK or Ireland begins with X so if you feel like writing a piece about a crossroad, or an x-marks-the-spot place get in touch.
In Place is open to submissions. If you write about place with attention, and without cliché, I'd be glad to hear from you. Pieces should be no more than 1,400 words and rooted in direct experience of somewhere in the UK or Ireland.
This is a literary travelogue, not a travel guide. I'm not interested in opening times or the café. I'm after the detail a visitor might walk past, or something about a place's history that mightn't be in a guidebook. I'm up for intimacy — whether you're writing from knowledge or curiosity — and I want a feeling that a place means something it didn't before. Editing will be light touch, and nothing changes without your agreement on the finished piece.
