Carlisle Journal Friday December 09 1870 FATAL MINING ACCIDENTS 

 
On Tuesday an inquest was held at Gilcrux on view of the body of Richard Watson, a miner, 38 years of age, who was killed in a colliery at Crosby, near Maryport, on the previous Wednesday. Deceased was engaged as shiftsman, in the pit, which is the property of Messrs. Munchester and Co., and at the time of the accident was drawing some propwood, when a large piece of coal fell from the roof, struck him on the head and killed him on the spot. The Jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally killed."

Richard had married Jane Simpson December 14 1859 at St John the Evangelist, Crosscanonby. At that time, Richard was about twenty seven, Jane twenty four. 

When Richard was killed, Jane was left with six children:
